Mental Mathematics Theme

14th Rabi-Us-Sani 1433 (8th March 2012)

by Hasnain Razzaq

Mathematics is that capstone science that has played a significant part in the dawn of modern development. The correct understanding and application of the mathematical models has proven to be a significant tool in attaining excellence in processes, unmatched efficiency and authentically effective outcomes. Mathematics in every era of scientific, social and human development has enjoyed a premium position in the ambit of sciences. The reason of this supernormal privilege, of being the highly focused and practiced, is its overwhelming application, not only in daily life affairs but in the development of other related sciences.

The Mathematics Department of Hira Foundation School being fully aware of the afore-mentioned facts has always rendered extra ordinary efforts in making the classrooms, a source of skill sets enhancement, conceptual understanding and practical application of the mathematical concepts. The efforts of the Department and respected faculty members have led to engendering extraordinary interest of the students in the field of Mathematics. The Department has an adamant co-ordination system that not only promotes team work but also helps in resolution of the problems proactively. The support of Top Management, indeed, has a vital role in instilling the values of collaboration, creativity and novelty within the Mathematics Department.

Mental Mathematics Theme is one of the initiatives taken, by the Department, to enrich and enlighten the students with the ability to comprehend, solve and apply the solutions of various mathematical problems. After a detailed discussion among the faculty members, it was discussed that Math worksheets would be designed and provided to the students for practice. However, the decision of content for worksheets was the biggest challenge faced. This required valuable input, knowledge and vision. The efforts of Mathematics Coordinator Ms. Hira Noor Khan are worth-appreciating in this regard who was able enough to efficiently decide the contents of these worksheets for different standards (Classes) based on a number of factors i.e. education level and expertise of the students, etc. The second step that required attention was to develop and design attractive worksheets, strictly according to the approved contents, in order to enhance the participation, interest and motivation of the students.

The responsibility of designing worksheets was bestowed to the faculty members. The efforts of the faculty members were remarkable as they deftly managed to meet the expected standards of worksheets. Almost all worksheets followed a common pattern. Initially few easy questions were included to communicate the concept and the level of difficulty increased as the number of questions increased. Strategy is the idea present on a piece of paper or in the mind of the strategist until and unless it is implemented in its true spirit. Thus, strategy of Mental Mathematics Theme required an efficient and effective implementation. The faculty members advanced with phenomenal performance in this capacity. The concepts were discussed in easy and understandable language. However, all possible efforts were incurred to promote team work, coordination and collaboration with the students.

The implications of the Mental Mathematics Theme, with the blessings of Allah (S.W.T), have been extremely positive, fruitful and rewarding. The students have enjoyed attempting the worksheets and were eager and highly motivated to complete their worksheets prior to the submission time. Mr. Rehman Ullah a student of Grade V, during a scheduled class, was observed saying that:

"Today! The time passed away very quickly. Worksheets are such fun."

The respected parents have also accredited the efforts of Mathematics Department in the recent Parent-Teacher Meeting. They have commended us for planning, crafting and implementing such an effective and beneficial Theme. This encouraging feedback has further strengthened the ambition of our Department to continue further with innovative activities like the Mental Mathematics Theme in the future as well, with the will of Allah (S.W.T).

Social Studies Presentation

20th Rabi-Ul-Awwal 1433 (13th February 2012)

Presentations are extremely essential for the students to succeed professionally in future life and the right time is when their minds are young. It is not just enough for everyone to have just the necessary capabilities to do any job, one should also be able to talk well, write well, and present oneself in an impressive manner.

Keeping this objective in mind, Mrs. Sumera Shah (teacher/coordinator Social studies) organized a special session for the students of class VI. Students were assigned selected topics from their social-studies syllabus and were asked to give presentations in groups with help of multimedia. The student’s presentations were observed by the senior management as well who really appreciated their efforts. As a part of their project they also had to make charts and models on the selected topic in order to create the right ambience in class. Students were instructed that the whole content of their presentation should be centered on catching the attention of the audience and keeping it interesting while delivering the actual creativity and knowledge.

Alhumdulillah, all the students were well prepared and presented their work in an intelligent and confident manner. They had done in-depth and comprehensive study of their topics which was being reflected in their delivery. The main purpose of this activity was to improve the communication skills of the students and to train them for teamwork among themselves.

Animal Funday

14th Moharram 1433 (10th December 2011)

HFS celebrated an exciting Animal Funday on 29 October 2011 as a part of their monthly theme ‘The farm’. This theme was integrated with the Islamic occasion of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha. Many farm and domestic animals like horse, camel, donkey, chickens, ducks, cow, goats etc. were displayed in the school ground so that the children could experience learning along with fun.

On this occasion our young talented students gave some lovely and meaningful performances. S.L.I presented a wonderful tableau on the poem ‘We’ll go to Makkah on Hajj’ and also on the great famous poem of Ismail Merithi, ‘Rab Ka Shukar Ada Kar Bhai.’

S.L.II presented a puppet show, ‘MOO KUCKOO BA’. It was an overall cute presentation with dialogues among the children and farm animals. This show was thoroughly enjoyed by all the kids.

Our little pre-school toddlers and junior kids did not remain behind as well. The juniors displayed a simple yet adorable presentation on the poem, ‘Sunnat-e-Ibrahimi’.

Although it was a hot day, still all the students enjoyed a lot and took part in all the activities with great enthusiasm and zest.

Show & Tell Program for Pre-School

2nd Ziqad, 1432 (1st October 2011)

Dear Parents, Asalam-O-Alikum,

We begin show and tell when we start the ‘Letter of the Week’ program. Children are assigned a specific day that is SATURDAY of the week to bring their show and tell. Their day will remain the same for the entire year. Each child’s show and tell object should be something that starts with the letter that corresponds to the week. The child orally gives the class three clues about what they have hidden in their backpack and we try to guess what it is. All children are expected to participate.

Purpose

Students Develop:

  • Oral language Skills (stating clues in a complete sentence, asking question)
  • Social Skills( listening attentively, raising hands to speak, waiting to be called upon)
  • Problem solving
  • Associating beginning letters and sound to real objects

Reminder for Parents:

  • There is no show and tell on weeks that we do not meet a new letter.
  • If your child is absent, there is no school, at there is a scheduled field trip on your child’s scheduled show and tell day, they will not have show and tell that week.
  • Please assist your child to find an object that is meaningful to them that begins with the letter of the week. And to practice orally stating their clues.

Toys Policy:

  • Children often like to share their favorite toys. This is fine, but please remember to keep toy guns and interactive games/T.V toys at home. These type of toys can disrupt our class learning environment.

Thank You for your cooperation.
